Coordinator needed for the Aldo Leopold Centennial Celebration

To mark the 2009 centennial of Aldo Leopold's arrival in the Southwest, a year-long series of events are being planned by a diverse group of organizations in New Mexico and Arizona. A Coordinator will be hired for 20 months, starting in May, 2008, to better organize these events. Enthusiasm, self-discipline, people skills, energy, and a passion for Leopold and conservation are required!

Summary: The Coordinator's principle duty is to coordinate the various activities associated with the 2009 Centennial Celebration of Aldo Leopold in the Southwest across two states and over the span of approximately 18 months. Activities include outreach, media relations, web site work, logistics, fundraising, volunteer coordination, liaison to various committees, and facilitation.

The Coordinator will work for the Leopold Celebration Executive Committee, and will report to its Chair. (Legally, the Coordinator will be an employee of the Bosque School, a 501c3 organization, and will have an office at the Bosque School.)

Task Area 1: Communications (50%)

The Coordinator will be the principle "pivot" for the various activities that take place during 2009. This requires:(1) management of the Master Calendar for all events on the Leopold web site; (2) coordinate communications between the various Committees to ensure a smooth-running year; (3) be a liaison to the various Committees for the Executive Committee; (4) coordinate some of the outreach / media / advertising for the various events; (5) coordinate and recruit volunteers; (6) write press releases.

Task Area 2: Outreach and Implementation (20%)

There will be times when the Coordinator will need to have a more visible role for the media and the public as well as assist in the implementation of the events. This includes: (1) be a point-of-contact for the media and public for a portion of the year's activities; (2) help plan some events (upon request); (3) help implement the year's events - in other words, be "on site" during a particular event to help with various activities; (4) assist with the documentation of each event - web site follow-up, photos, etc.

Task Area 3: Fundraising (10%)

During the year, the Coordinator can assist with various fundraising activities. This includes: (1) raising money through grants or donations for specific events when possible; (2) helping with advertising or sponsorships; (3) collecting money through the web site; (4) directing Centennial participants to funding opportunities.

Task Area 4: Administration (20%)

The Coordinator is responsible to the Executive Committee for various administrative functions related to the position. This includes: (1) financial bookkeeping and reporting, including working with the 501c3 host organization to ensure proper accountability; (2) participation in a Final Report to the funders; (3) proper reporting of his or her day-to-day work schedule and accomplishments; (4) keeping minutes of meetings and any other administrative duties as required by the Executive Committee.

Qualifications for the Hire

The job will last approximately 18 months - from mid-2008 to early 2010. Depending on funding, it will likely start at half-time, rise to full-time during 2009, and drop back to half-time by 2010. The position will be based in Albuquerque.
